The Whatleys of Western Clarke County, Alabama

From Virginia to the Carolinas

Shirley Whatley (1690 - 1779) was among the 1st Whatleys to be born and and to die in the New World. He is considered to be the father of all of the southern Whatleys in the US. He was born in Virginia, and is known to have bought land in Hanover and Orange Counties. He died in Warren County, NC.

One of Shirley's sons was Shirley Whatley II (or Shirley Jr). It is thought that he stated calling himself Shirley Sr once he moved to South Carolina, and had a son whom he named Shirley Jr. (really Shirley III).

Frederick Whatley is known from 1790 Census records to have lived in the Mountain Creek section of what is now Greenwood County, SC (formerly part of Edgefield County). Records show that Frederick was deeded land and slave ownership from his father Shirley.
